Saturated steam weeding grant for Coochiemudlo Island

Coastcare is proud to announce the awarding of a  Community Sustainability Action Environmental Grant from the Queensland Government.

Confirmation of the $27,988 grant was received yesterday in a letter from the Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection and Minister for National Parks and the Great Barrier Reef, the Hon Dr Steven Miles MP

Funding for the project, “Promoting sustainable vegetation management and ecosystem resilience on Coochiemudlo Island” will allow the purchase of a saturated steam weeding machine to be used by trained Coastcare volunteers and Quandamooka rangers to undertake chemical-free weeding around the island foreshore.

Initial work will focus on  areas currently maintained  by Coastcare as well as Bushcare zones on Main Beach.

Revegetation of denuded areas will occur simultaneously with the planting of native ground covers, grasses, shrubs and trees, including many propagated by the island’s native nursery

The project will be supported by Indigiscapes.

Thanks to Redland City Council, in particular Cr Lance Hewlett, Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation, Healthy Land and Water and Bushcare for your support.
